Waymo, Alphabet’s autonomous taxi company, has officially announced plans to bring its robotaxi service to Toronto — its first market in Canada and one of the coldest cities it has ever operated in. The announcement appeared on Waymo’s official blog under the title “Hello Toronto! Waymo is En Route” and was confirmed by TechCrunch’s coverage.
As part of its accelerated expansion strategy, Waymo has started partnering with third-party companies to manage its fleet in each city. In Toronto, that partner is Toronto-based Element Fleet Management. Waymo expects the operation to support hundreds of jobs, spanning fleet maintenance, validation driving, customer service, and operations.
The hardest test is not regulation but weather. Heavy snow, frozen roads, and low visibility are conditions Waymo’s lidar sensors and autonomous driving system have never faced at full operational scale. Success in Toronto would be strong evidence that autonomous technology is ready for four-season climates — the industry’s biggest open question.
The announcement follows another major financial step: the company closed a 5 billion US dollar debt financing this month to speed up its business expansion. For cities in Southeast Asia — including Indonesian metropolises — the remaining question is no longer “can robotaxis handle snow”, but when this technology will be tested on the congested roads of tropical megacities.
